Replacement Caravan Mattresses As comfortable as your mattress at home!

This is actually a more interesting question than it first appears.

A typical domestic mattress might last around 8 years. Assuming it’s slept on every night, that’s roughly 2,900 nights of use before replacement becomes necessary.

Now compare that to a caravan mattress. Even if you used your caravan every weekend throughout the year, you’d only be sleeping on it for around 100 nights annually. At that rate, it would take nearly 30 years to accumulate the same amount of use as an 8 year old mattress at home.

So why don’t caravan mattresses last 30 years?

The answer is that many factory fitted caravan mattresses are made using lower quality materials that quickly lose their shape and support, leading to just a fraction of the lifespan you’d expect from an everyday mattress at home.

Of course, this isn’t true of every caravan mattress. The problem isn’t that it’s a caravan mattress, it’s how the mattress has been made. A caravan mattress built using the same materials and manufacturing standards as a domestic mattress should have the potential to last much longer because it’s subjected to far fewer nights of use.

Unfortunately, many manufacturers take the view that because most caravans are only used occasionally, the mattress doesn’t need to be built to the same standard as one used every night at home. That’s where many caravan owners run into problems. That’s why it’s often better to judge a caravan mattress by its condition rather than its age. If you’re waking up with aches and pains, noticing dips in the surface, or finding it harder to get comfortable at night, the mattress may no longer be providing the support it once did.

In theory, a caravan mattress used only occasionally should last significantly longer than a mattress used every night at home. In practice, poor quality materials often counteract the low amount of use. With this in mind, the number one priority when purchasing a replacement caravan mattress should be the quality of the materials and construction.

At CSB, we don’t treat caravan mattresses differently simply because they’re destined for a caravan. We build them using the same materials, specifications and production methods as our domestic mattresses, because we believe you deserve the same level of comfort and durability wherever you’re sleeping.

Most caravan mattresses are designed to keep weight and manufacturing costs down, rather than maximise comfort. The trouble is, it doesn’t take long for those materials to compress and lose their ability to support your body properly. This can lead to pressure points around the shoulders, hips and lower back, as well as a lack of overall support, making it difficult to get a comfortable night’s sleep.

One of the easiest ways to improve comfort is to identify what’s actually causing the problem. Many caravan owners assume the mattress is to blame, but that’s not always the case.

If your mattress is sagging, has visible dips, or leaves you waking up with aches and pains, it may no longer be providing adequate support. However, it’s also worth checking the bed base underneath, as damaged or uneven slats can affect comfort just as much as the mattress itself.

If your mattress is still in reasonable condition but simply feels too firm, a quality mattress topper can sometimes provide additional comfort and pressure relief. However, if the mattress is already sagging or lacking support, adding a topper will do little to solve the underlying problem and often only makes matters worse.

If you’ve tried these options and still struggle to get comfortable, it may be time to consider replacing the mattress itself. After all, if you wouldn’t tolerate an uncomfortable mattress at home, there’s no reason you should put up with one on holiday.

Unfortunately, there isn’t a “one size fits all” mattress for everyone with back pain.

One of the biggest misconceptions is that a firmer mattress automatically reduces back pain. While this may be true for a large majority of people, the reality is that comfort and support are highly subjective, and what feels too firm for one person may feel too soft for another.

A mattress that provides excellent support for a heavier back sleeper could feel uncomfortably hard to a lighter side sleeper. Equally, a mattress that feels wonderfully soft and comfortable to one person may allow someone else to sink too deeply, causing poor spinal alignment.

The key isn’t finding the firmest mattress possible, but finding a caravan mattress that provides the right balance of comfort and support for your body type, sleeping position and personal preferences.

The ideal caravan mattress should keep your spine in a neutral position while providing enough cushioning to relieve pressure points. What that feels like will vary from person to person and depends on factors such as your weight, sleeping position and individual preference.

It’s also worth considering what you’re currently sleeping on at home. If you regularly wake up feeling refreshed in your own bed, but suffer from aches and pains in your caravan, the issue may simply be that your caravan mattress isn’t providing the same level of comfort and support.

Rather than focusing on finding the “best” mattress for back pain, it’s usually better to focus on finding a mattress that keeps your body properly supported and comfortable throughout the night. In many cases, that alone can make a noticeable difference.

For many years, pocket springs were considered the premium option, and they still have plenty of fans today. However, modern foam technology has advanced significantly over the last decade, changing the way many mattress manufacturers view the debate.

One of the limitations of a sprung mattress is that springs provide resistance wherever pressure is applied, rather than adapting precisely to the body’s shape. Because they can’t selectively accommodate heavier and lighter parts of the body, they can create pressure points around areas such as the shoulders and hips, where the body presses more deeply into the mattress. This is one of the reasons you don’t typically see traditional sprung mattresses in healthcare settings, where patients may spend extended periods lying in bed and pressure management is a key consideration. Foam behaves differently, compressing and contouring to the body’s unique shape, helping to distribute weight more evenly and reduce pressure in sensitive areas.

Springs can also be restrictive when it comes to creating custom shaped caravan mattresses. You can’t have half a spring, which limits how precisely springs can be positioned around cut-outs, angles and unusual shapes. In reality, many sprung mattresses still rely heavily on layers of foam around the perimeter and sleeping surface to achieve the final shape and comfort level.

That doesn’t mean pocket sprung mattresses are inherently bad. However, many people who once slept on sprung mattresses have since switched to foam and never looked back. For caravan mattresses in particular, where unusual shapes and space restrictions are common, we believe modern foam offers significant advantages over traditional sprung constructions.

Many people assume that because a caravan mattress is made to measure, it will take months to manufacture. In reality, it’s often much quicker than you’d expect.

Our custom caravan mattresses can be manufactured in as little as 3 working days, though actual lead times do vary throughout the year and can increase during particularly busy periods.

The short answer is no! With hundreds of different makes and models of caravan on the market, there’s no “one size fits all” when it comes to caravan mattresses. Whilst two caravan mattresses may look the same at first glance, when you get down to the nitty gritty of checking measurements you can nearly always guarantee slight variations.

When designing a caravan, designers know the key to comfort is maximising the amount of living space available, and this results in the caravan mattress often being far from standard. Trying to fit a standard size mattress into a caravan is nothing short of a recipe for disaster – squeezing a 4FT6 mattress into a 4FT2 space is only going to damage a perfectly good mattress and give you a workout!

Some people choose to cut down a standard mattress to fit their caravan themselves, but this can cause damage to the integrity and warranty of the mattress and is never a sensible decision.

Custom Size Beds caravan mattresses can be cut to any size, whether that’s standard or custom, so you can make the most of your living space.

Many factory fitted caravan mattresses range between 10cm-20cm in depth, with 15cm being the most common thickness. When it comes to comfort however, the general rule of thumb is the thicker the better up to a maximum of 20cm. Anything above and beyond 20cm will only result in a heavier mattress with no noticeable difference in comfort.

With this in mind, where the space allows, we always recommend our customers order their replacement caravan mattresses with an optimal depth of 20cm. Whilst we can cut our mattresses thicker, we strongly believe it’s just not worth the extra money.

But what about thinner mattresses? We understand not everyone can accommodate a 20cm deep mattress so we cut our caravan mattresses to ANY thickness you require! If your mattress is 12cm or less we recommend you upgrade to our firmer more supportive base foam to provide an enhanced level of support to make the most of the depth available.
