What is the new mattress smell?

All brand new foams emit a distinctive odour. This is commonly known as off-gassing. Similar to a freshly painted room, this new foam odour will gradually clear.

How long does the new mattress smell last?

The amount of time it takes for the new mattress smell to dissipate depends on a variety of factors, however, most new mattresses lose their odour within a week or two.

There are a few steps you can take to get rid of the new mattress smell as quickly as possible, including:

• Ensure that your home is properly ventilated by opening windows and doors to optimise airflow

• If you have one, use a dehumidifier in the same room as your new mattress

• If possible, open your mattress outdoors and let it breathe for a few hours before bringing it indoors

Note: Mattresses which aren’t being used, may take longer to neutralise. As you apply body weight and compress the mattress, air is forced out of the foam. Once that body weight is removed, the foam bounces back, pulling in fresh air. If the mattress is not being used, there is nothing to promote this circulation.

Is the smell harmful?

The new mattress smell is generally considered harmless and usually goes away within a week or two.

CertiPUR is a voluntary testing, analysis and certification programme for the health and safety properties of polyurethane foam used in bedding and upholstered furniture applications. It specifies substances that may not be used in the production of polyurethane foams and sets stringent maximum limits for some components.

The scheme provides clear criteria that foam manufacturers are required to comply with, with restrictions concerning substances in foam which may be of concern for health, or the environment. CertiPUR certification means that off-gases are measured and strictly limited. Carcinogens, Mutagens, and substances that could harm human health are banned from use under the Certipur programme.

  The strength of off-gassing odour varies from mattress to mattress, however, most smells go away within the first two weeks of you opening your new mattress.

• Why do new mattresses smell?

  Most new mattresses release an odour during the off-gassing process. The good news is that these gases are harmless and dissipate of their own accord.

• How long should you leave a new mattress before sleeping on it?

  This all depends on the type of mattress you purchase. For example, sometimes you can use your new mattress within 6 hours whereas some mattresses may need longer. Check the guidance that comes with your mattress (all of our mattresses can be slept on after 6 hours of being removed from their packaging).
